You Hear That?

You hear that trumpet playing?
The one that sounds like a regular
At a bar
That is sure this is the night
He finds romance
The one that blares he knows he’s in jail
The jail where he is king but alone
The jail he chooses not to find
The key to escape
Into the fear of the unknown of another’s world
Can you feel it?
The vibrations from another universe
A new universe that hides
Behind the moon on a cold winter night
Where you inhale
And feel the air you’ve become so used to
Like a fish and water
Then exhale and can see your breath
A cloud of trash from within
Every breath a chance
To be clean
To begin again
A new slate
A new musical note

Crying, no weeping in the room behind the curtain
On the other side, friends and family mourning
The sudden loss of an eight-year-old child
From a car crash
But on this side the final realization my dad is gone
And though it was six months earlier
And though I cried at the time
Now was when it hit
Now was never going to be what now had been in the past
Now was a new world
